Terms and Conditions

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING TERMS & CONDITIONS BEFORE REGISTERING TO PAINT AT PLEIN AIR DOWN UNDER 2026

PLEASE NOTE:   We encourage and welcome spectators to watch the artists and take part in the free have-a-go art activities; however, all painters need to be registered to paint within any of the festival footprints. Register here

Definitions

  • Plein Air: art created on location, depicting what the artist can see.
  • Festival: Plein Air Down Under (PADU), including all festival paint-outs, workshops, competitions, exhibitions and associated events.
  • Registered Artist: an individual who has registered to paint at this year’s Plein Air Down Under festival.
  • Entrant: a Registered Artist that has submitted artwork into this year’s Plein Air Down Under exhibition for judging.
  • Entry/Entries: artwork that has been submitted for judging.
  • Commission: the portion of an artwork’s sale price payable to the person/organisation hosting the exhibition that resulted in the artwork’s sale.

 

Stamping of Surfaces

  1. Only stamped surfaces are eligible for judging.
  2. Surfaces must start off blank. Pre-toned canvas, paper, or gessoed surfaces are acceptable, providing they are a single uniform colour.
  3. There is no limit to the number of blank surfaces may bring; however, these will need to be stamped before painting begins. Stamping locations will be provided closer to the festival weekend.

Judging and Awards

  1. This is a Plein Air competition. All entries (the “Artwork”) must be the Entrant’s original work, started and completed by the Entrant while working outdoors, within the designated festival areas and times.  The Artwork cannot be touched up or modified outside of the defined contest locations or time periods.
  2. Artworks created during Plein Air Down Under Workshops or Masterclasses are not eligible for prizes and/or awards.
  3. Entries submitted for judging must be an original plein air paintings or artworks. Photography prints and three-dimensional artworks will be accepted.

General

  1. Registered Artists grant Plein Air Down Under permission to use photographs of their paintings for current and future promotional purposes.
  2. Photography and videography will take place at all Plein Air Down Under activities. By registering to paint at the festival, Registered Artists consent to Plein Air Down Under using photos and/or videos for current and future promotional purposes.
  3. Registered Artists may occasionally receive an SMS message with information relevant to the Plein Air Down Under Outdoor Painting Festival.
  4. When registering to paint at Plein Air Down Under, artists must select only one of the following categories:
  • Open: All artists, regardless of age or skill level, may select this option; entries will be judged against professional artists and Guest Artists.
  • Non-Professional: For artists over 18 years of age who prefer to be judged against other non-professionals, rather than professional and/or Guest Artists.
  • Youth: Aged 18 or under.
  1. Entrants aged 18 years and younger must provide parent/guardian information on the Artist Registration Form.

Plein Air Down Under Festival Weekend Exhibition:  Mandurah Performing Arts Centre 28 September to 11 October 2026

  1. Each Registered Artist may submit a maximum of two artworks to be exhibited at ManPAC, painted at Plein Air Down Under events between 22 and 27 September 2026.
  2. Paintings exhibited as part of the Plein Air Down Under Festival Weekend Exhibition must be framed; watercolours and pastels must be presented with a matt board. Plan ahead and bring frames to suit the size of your board, canvas or paper.
  3. Artwork for exhibition and judging can be submitted to ManPAC on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, from 5 – 7pm each night, and must include:
  • On the back: artist name, title, price, medium, contact phone number.
  • On the label provided: artist name, title, price, medium.
  • Hanging mechanism: g., two D rings and cord.
  1. It is the Entrant’s responsibility to present their work for judging in a professional manner, with appropriate framing and hanging hardware.

Plein Air Down Under Experience Peel Exhibition:  Mandurah Performing Arts Centre 28 September to 11 October 2026

  1. Each Registered Artist may submit a maximum of two artworks to be exhibited at ManPAC, painted at Plein Air Down Under Experience Peel events between 22 and 25 September 2026. Note – these two artworks are in addition to the two for the Festival Weekend Exhibition.
  2. Experience Peel paintings are to be unframed to create a “direct from the easel” feel. Watercolours and/or pastel paintings must have a support or matt to hold the paper in place.
  3. Experience Peel artwork for exhibition and judging must be submitted to ManPAC on Saturday 26 September by 9.30am, and include a label with the artist’s name, title, price, and medium.
  4. A commission of 25% will be applied to artworks sold at the Festival Exhibition and/or any time during the seven days of Plein Air Down Under Outdoor Painting Festival activities.
  5. Payments to artists (purchase price minus 25% commission) will be made approximately 30 days after the exhibition period, typically by bank transfer.
  6. The Plein Air Down Under Festival Exhibition will run from 28 September to 11 October 2026. Paintings will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition unless prior arrangements are approved by the curator.
  7. It is the Entrant’s responsibility to collect artwork on Monday 12 October, or arrange a method of delivery and/or freight. A Perth metropolitan collection point will be offered as an alternative to collecting from Mandurah. Artwork not collected will be donated to a local charity.

Refund Policy

  1. Artist Registration fees are non-refundable.
  2. Participants who cancel a Masterclass or Workshop registration more than 30 days before the event will incur a 20% retention fee.
  3. Participants who cancel a Masterclass or Workshop registration less than 30 days before the event will not receive a refund but may transfer their place to another person. A 20% retention fee applies to transfer to another participant.
  4. All refunds that are due will be issued after the festival weekend is over.

Cancellation of the Festival by Plein Air Down Under Refund

  1. In the event that Plein Air Down Under cancels the festival for any reason, all Masterclasses, Workshops and Artist Registrations will be refunded in full. Plein Air Down Under accepts no responsibility for expenses incurred by the artist (e.g., travel arrangements)

Privacy Notice

Plein Air Down Under respects your privacy.  We collect and use personal information such as name, contact details, registration details, and payment information to manage events, competitions, workshops, and communications.

Photographs and video may be taken at events for promotional purposes.  By registering or attending, you consent to the reasonable use of your image unless you notify us otherwise.

The Plein Air Down Under Festival does not sell personal information.  Information may be shared with service providers, volunteers, or funding bodies when required for event operations or reporting.
