TONY ROBINSON

Tony Robinson is primarily a painter of oil portraits and plein air landscapes, he has won several awards and commissions. He was a participant in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2020 and has given many portrait painting workshops.

Tony was born and studied fine art in the UK and has lived in Ireland since the 1980s.

Whether for a landscape or a portrait, Tony prefers to work alla prima, from life, whenever possible. His chief goal is to capture the portrait sitter’s likeness and presence or, in a landscape painting, to record the atmosphere and sense of place. His style strives to be both direct and nuanced, aiming to move swiftly towards a resolution of the image, while remaining ready to capitalise on random marks or effects and what they can contribute to the end result.

Tony has won awards at international plein air events in the Netherlands and in the USA and been an invited artist and an adjudicator at various painting festivals. With some friends, in 2008 he initiated Art in the Open, a plein air festival in Ireland which has grown into the largest of its kind in Europe and annually attracting internationally well-known landscape artists. He is still very much involved in AITO 17 years on. After a career involving mural painting, signwriting, teaching, picture framing, art retailing and gallerist, Tony now concentrates on painting (and occasional teaching) exclusively.
