Cass Gartner

Cass has been painting watercolours for around 28 years and loves it for the spontaneity, translucency and the occasional uncontrollability of the medium.

Since arriving in Western Australia from South Africa in 1987, Cass has been exhibiting annually in and around Perth. Her love of watercolours continues to grow and she enjoys the obvious advantages of working from life, welcoming the challenges it demands.

Cass paints en plein air in Europe and delights in the café and street scenes in Paris, Barcelona, Italy, Poland and the UK. Her love of European Street scenes is evident in the subjects she paints, where she uses her photographic skills to capture the scenes when she travels.

As a feature artist at Plein Air Down Under 2020, Cass will conduct a one day Intermediate – Advanced Watercolour Workshop on 25 September and will be demonstrating and painting over the festival weekend.

This one-day workshop will appeal to people who have a good understanding of watercolours and how they can be used to simplify and romanticize a scene.

Cass has been a regular attendee at the Charles Sturt University Summer School studying watercolours with a variety of highly acclaimed and accomplished Australian watercolourists. She has been teaching in Perth for over ten years and has been a member of the Watercolour Society of WA for some 14 years.

Cass has won many awards at the Society’s annual exhibition and won the 2018 Mandurah Crab Fest en plein air competition. More recently, Cass has developed a liking for portraiture and was lucky a finalist at an exhibition for the 2018 Collie Art Prize.

Cass has exhibited in Poland and Italy and was invited to be a demonstration artist at Italy’s International Water Colour Exhibition.
